Our lunch stop was, however, a bratwurst sausage in a bread roll as we strolled in a fleamarket, along the way. I was of course in my element, immmensely enjoying seeing all the German bits of bricabrac for sale. Much of it was rather expensive but I made a couple of small purchases.
Typical restored castle on the Mosel river. Many are still ruins.
Our final stop for the day was at the twin town (each part on opposite sides of the river) of Tries-Karden. We found a Bed and Breakfast, a little Swiss chalet, run by a delightful warm German woman.
We have almost no German and she had no English but we made ourselves understood. We had rather quaint rooms in the attic, being careful not to hit our heads on the sloping ceilings. Jan and Barry had a bathroom in their room, ingeniously if rather awkwardly installed in a tiny corner. Our bathroom was just next door. Nothing matched and our bed linen was a riot of colourful parrots, but it was clean and cosy.
Although we had cloud and light rain for much of the day, by afternoon we had brilliant blue skies and sunshine. Town was very quiet. Our hostess sent us to a recommended restaurant which we found -- a Thai place in a shopping centre, which did not appeal, but we found a little bar where we drank more reisling and shared large platters of various cheeses, with ham and tiny tomatoes, for our dinner.
Breakfast was another huge assortment of meats and cheeses with boiled eggs served in their own egg shaped insulated covers. We ate our fill, but our landlady was dismayed that we ate what was, in her eyes, so little. But we are feeling a little overloaded with cheese at the moment.
